Invest In Yourself
Quality Life Forum ​Advocacy and Empowerment Series

It’s end of the year. The pandemic made it tough, survival is a great accomplishment.

You are making life investments every year. Investment is not only for your wealth, but more important in your health, which is more than just absent of illness. Where should you invest in? 

1. ​Nurture Your Mind and Body Nurturing both your mind and body allows you to have more to give now and in the future — more energy, more knowledge, more compassion, more ideas, greater strength, physical and mental endurance.

Expand your mind. Learning something new and keeping your mind active even in simple ways helps to grow and maintain your mental ability.
  • Read – anything of your interests and everything you should know.
  • Explore culture – attend performances, listen to different style of music, travel, or join an organization or group comprised of people from different backgrounds, in person or virtual.
  • Open your mind – engage in conversations with those who disagree with you. Don’t get offensive, but look at an argument and try to make a case for the opposing point of view.
  • Keep your mind active – learn something new (i.e., new language, new skill, new place, etc), play word games, board games that include strategy, or try using your brain to perform simple calculations rather than relying on a calculator.

2. Care for your body. Your body is like a well-oiled machine. If you care for it in the way that you might maintain an expensive car, it will perform marvelously and last for a very long time. Remember the basics:
  • Give it high quality fuel – meaning to make healthy food choices. What you eat does play a large role in your energy and ability to perform. Trust you are what you eat.
  • Don’t push it too hard – meaning to rest and relax often, slow down and don’t overload your system. Also, don’t shift gears too quickly; it causes stress and harmful to your system.
  • Get regular and necessary maintenance – meaning to go to the doctor when you’re sick – don’t put it off until you totally break down. Better yet, use preventative maintenance; get check-ups, take appropriate self-care and pay attention to irregular or erratic behavior.
  • Polish the exterior – meaning to polish your self-image. This is not about facelifts and Botox, but may be getting a nice hairdo, with stylish outfit that make you feel confident and attractive.
Investing in yourself truly makes a difference in your life, your well-being, and your ability to thrive and perform to the best of your ability. The extent to which you invest in yourself, mind and body, not only shapes the way you interact with others, it often reflects the opinion you have of yourself.

3. Be your own boss: Your future is largely determined by your willingness and ability to invest in yourself now.
Human body require maintenance by ourselves. Self-care is not selfish. Selfishness is an anxious focus on the self. Take self-care promote personal growth, such as to sustain family and social relationships that bring us connection and meaning, get quality sleep to rest tired body, and spend good time on personal enjoyment.

4. Find healthy comfort items
One of the most important ways you can invest in yourself is to comfort your mind and body in healthy ways. Your habit can make or break it.

If you are to stay flexible, you mostly feel ease and secure. When you feel uncertain or insecure, your brain tries to rescue you by activating your dopamine systems. This dopamine rush encourages you to seek rewards, making temptations more tempting. Think of this as your brain pushing you toward a comfort item…like an extra glass of wine instead of a reasonable bedtime. Or the entire pan of brownies. Or an extra little something in your Amazon cart.

But instead of turning to social media, junk food, or booze to soothe your rattled nerves, You will do better when you preemptively comfort your mind and body in healthy ways.

Make a list of healthy ways to comfort yourself. Can you mask up and go for a hike with a neighbor? Schedule a call with a friend? Reflect on what you are grateful for? Let yourself take a little nap? Perhaps you could seek out a hug or watch a funny YouTube video.

Those things may seem small—or even luxurious—but they enable you to be the people that you want to be.

​5. Making Intelligent Investments in Your Health 
  • Educate Yourself: we all have our own habits to do things, sometimes we learned from a mentor, sometimes we didn’t know better ways to do. Understand High-Risk Behaviors and break bad habits Willing to learn and try something new will keep your mind open and active. New technology changes our lives. Keep it up and don’t resist improvements.
  • Healthy Eating: quality food provides quality fuel to energize your body. To learn more about protein, fat, carbohydrates, body nourishment and time-restricted feeding, just with a click to follow the links accordingly.
  • Regular Exercise Routines: Exercise is an important energy source for life. To learn more, go to exercise is medicine and keep fit for your age.
  • Proper Sleeping Patterns: We should spend 1/3 of the day in bed, hopefully quality sleeping, to maintain good health. Go to Sleep well to learn more. 
  • Preventive Care: Wellness check-ups are life maintenance. Prevention is the foundation for good health and immunity is essential for healthy aging. Click and follow the link to learn more.
  • Stress Management: Stress is part of our lives. We just have to deal with it. To learn more about stress management strategies, go to dealing with chronic stress. 
  • Practice Moderation: Moderation is a golden rule to follow in life. Practice moderation is beneficial for healthy aging. 
  • Social life/Friends: living alone may contribute to loneliness, but it will take more than a roommate to cure the lonely feelings of an entire nation. Instead, the trick is to make sure that people feel connected, no matter who they are — or aren’t — living with.   • Invest a health coach: It’s worth it in the long run and save you from the costs of trial and error.  A health coach can assist you in putting all of these strategies into action. Summary: The best resource that you have right now for making a contribution to the world is YOU. When that resource is depleted, your most valuable asset is damaged. When neglect investing in your bodies, minds, or spirits, you derail life train to the best potential future. Investing in yourself means making small, continual improvements that enable you to do more, be more, grow more, and love more. These investments can lead to immediate opportunities and long-term positive change. They can help you earn more money, discover the future you always wanted, follow your dreams, and uncover hobbies that fill you with joy. Make yourself accountable for self-improvement and be a healthy happy person. Your happiness matters; happiness is a choice. A healthy mindset and body is the baseline for a happy life.
