Simplify Life for Healthy Aging
Quality Life Forum Healthy Living Series
May, 2021

At certain age, somewhere around mid-life, you found that your life is loaded and you can hardly drag on. Everything in your life takes up space and resources, that is for all the things you own, everything you do, and each person or event you spend time with, all at a cost to you. As your journey goes on with everything accumulates, its overwhelming.

You start thinking more about well-being and desire to simplify life, which is also a form of self-care that improves mind, body, and mood for healthy life style. Simplifying your life will give you more freedom and enjoyment. It will allow you more space mentally and physically, and spend time with what you want to do. Downsizing is a turning point decision. If you have done it, you sure feel lighter, make sure to set up clutter control rules and not to build it up again. If you are not ready for it yet, don’t rush for this big decision; but start a spring clean-up now to see for yourself how much better you feel when you let go of things you no longer need.

For readiness, think through some important areas and be prepared.  Accomplishing these takes a plan, consistent action and focus.

  1. Re-train your mindset to build a healthy mentality. Get motivated for healthy aging is the bottom line. Determine what is best for your life. It is time for a reality check and re-evaluate your values today.  Prioritize your life and know what is truly important to you now – Wealth or health? Money or time? More materials things or personal freedom? More social friends or quality family time? New mindset transforms new behavior. Even you made the right choice, your heart may still feel sad from going through emotional attachments separations. Negative emotions carry psychological burdens. Resentment, bitterness, fear, guilt, and grief will not contribute to healthy aging. Learn to eliminate toxic thoughts and let go the past. Replace negative thoughts with positive terms – gratitude, forgiveness, freedom, hope and simplicity.
  2. Set realistic expectations with clear goals and make time commitments – limit goals that you are striving to accomplish, you will improve your focus and success rate. Start small and one thing at a time at you own pace. Setting a goal, breaking that goal into small parts and making sure you have what you need to obtain and meet your goal. When you complete a goal, you gain more confidence to go on to the next.
  3. De-clutter your living space – Your environment affects how you feel physically and psychologically. Too many material possessions complicate lives to a greater degree than being  credited for usefulness. They drain your bank account and energy for maintenance. Investing time to de-clutter the non-essential possessions is not an easy task but you will never regret it. However, this is also an unique challenge. Getting rid of longtime possessions isn’t easy. The number one reason people can’t de-clutter is they are often sentimentally attached to what they own. There are just too many painful decisions that have to be made about what to keep or go. Take time to go through the process and give yourself permission to keep those items with true value as you can rationalize it. Donation is a kindness act. There's satisfaction in knowing that your donation will benefit others in need. Selling usable items on-line is also an option.
  4. Clean-up social circle, social media, and cut out toxic influencers. For any toxic or high maintenance relationships, setting healthy boundaries to protect your life is necessary. No need to concern too much, just be yourself. At certain age, accept to have less connections and this is natural. Being alone and being self-content signify strong inner strength and maturity. Relationship quality is more meaningful than quantity. Time is your most valuable resource as you can never earn more of it. Therefore, release yourself from the time commitments that are not in line with your greatest values. Reserve your valuable time slot to what and whom deserve it. Make sure you allocate some time for just being in the moment and with loved ones.
  5. Start subtracting one non-essential item or unhealthy behavior from your life each day, could be luxuries, debts, clothing options, weights, artificial food ingredients, supplements, alcohol, smoking, technology apps, screen time, accounts and subscriptions, gossips……  Remember, life is simpler when you are physically and financially healthy.

Less is more - The less you own, the less you have, and the less time you invest into things you don't want to do, the simpler life becomes. Slow down, set your mind and body peacefully, to enjoy your simplified day. When things are simple, life is more.
