Gratitude Power for Wellbeing
Quality Life Forum Self-Care Series
December, 2021

Season's greetings! A warm happy holiday wishes to all! As the holidays are approaching; what makes us happy for the holidays? Building gratitude into daily life and share appreciations will increase our happiness scores. There are a lot to be grateful, more so now. Let’s celebrate this holiday season with joy and gratitude.

Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves. As a result, being grateful also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals — whether to other people, nature, or a higher power. In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.

There is growing evidence that being grateful may not only bring good feelings. It could lead to better health. Gratitude has the natural power to make us -

  • feeling good and content
  • release toxic emotions and manage stress
  • Lowers blood pressure and cortisol levels
  • Improves the quality of sleep
  • Enhance motivation for self-care
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Benefit heart health

Gratitude relies on the brain networks associated with social bonding and stress relief; this may explain in part how grateful feelings lead to health benefits over time. Feeling grateful and recognizing help from others creates a more relaxed body state and allows the subsequent benefits of lowered stress to wash over us. Feeling positive emotion can improve body functions and strengthening immune system.  Gratitude is also a survival skill can help getting through hard times in life.

Gratitude works on human minds and bodies, with 4 insights behind it’s psychological benefits, as suggested from a gratitude letter writing study:

  1. Gratitude unshackles mind from toxic emotions
  2. Gratitude helps even without sharing it
  3. Gratitude’s benefits take time
  4. Gratitude has lasting effects on the brain

Gratitude is a common thread through many religions and philosophies. Gratitude encourages us to focus on what we have rather than missing, to carefully value and thankful for where we are.  Gratitude is a critical part of thriving and a cornerstone of the holiday tradition. You might get a warm glow from expressing gratitude at Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas gift sharing, and New Year’s cheers. To truly derive long-lasting benefits, make it a routine in your daily life.

Practice gratitude is an important part of healthy aging -

  1. Appreciate precious golden years. Feeling old is not because of increased age, but decreased confidence for wellbeing. You have more than enough reasons thanking your body continues to serve you well; be kind, patient, gentle and compassionate. A well maintained machine can shine and keep going strong for a century or longer.
  2. Let the inner child out from you. Keep learning and find answers to satisfy your curiosity. Don’t lose motivations to follow your own heart and pursue your life dreams. Joy, gratitude and purpose are the three keys to healthy aging.
  3. Appreciate the sunshine of your day and let it into your heart, break out the dark shadows. A healthy mindset will keep a youthful heart.
  4. Appreciate the present life moment and quality of life. Explore opportunities with full personal potential; engage in health maintenance and to be the best of yourself. Happiness is a choice and you are the boss with the decision power.
  5. Be grateful for the meaningful works done and bring you to where you are at today when looking back. Let go of what have happened and not to worry about what is not happening.
  6. Appreciate what you have now, before sorrow for knowing how well you had until it’s missed. Don’t take anything for granted and be grateful for what comes each day – the fresh air, the seasons in nature, the tone of music, a genuine smile, an ordinary peaceful day…… Paying attention to details will fill your live with joy.
  7. Appreciate moderation and slow down. Take your time to focus on self-care. Making room for healthy habits, starting with what you eat, how you exercise, and what you spend time doing. Not because you “have to,” or “just get it done”, but because you value wellness and enjoy the result as well as the process.
  8. Appreciate the time to be alone. Transform loneliness into solitude, which is a true self-freedom and natural humanity state. Accept and rediscover yourself, be able to enjoy living on your own.  Being alone give you time to reflect on your lives and to take inventory of all the things to be grateful for. Focus on the good and find your gratitude being in solitude, without feeling the pain of loneliness.

In fact, research found that the experience of gratitude was greatest in older adults and least in middle aged and younger adults. Furthermore, the associations between gratitude and subjective well-being remained relatively constant across the adult lifespan. Gratitude allows individuals to focus on and appreciate the positive aspects of life, even in the context of great loss and difficulty. Many researchers consider the process of aging as a delicate balance of managing losses while maintaining optimal functioning.
