Transform Pandemic Fear to Self-Care
Health Coaching Session April, 2020

You heard and read a lot about Coronavirus recently. Schools and many businesses are run on-line. Restaurants, theaters, libraries, museums, shops, and non-essential businesses are closed. Social events are canceled. You are told to practice social distancing and stay at home.

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a pandemic with global outbreaks spread quickly. No effective medical treatments are available for this new viral disease, although immunization and new drugs are under development. No supplement will cure or prevent Coronavirus. Older adults among age 60 to 80, especially with chronic medical conditions,  are particularly vulnerable to severe or fatal infection. The fight against the coronavirus outbreak has disrupted the lives of millions of people in most countries worldwide. The WHO had raised the healthy emergency to its highest level in March.

During this difficult time, everyone stay home is our contributions to our community in slowing down the disease spread.  The best thing to do is to keep a positive spirit and take good care of yourself. Make sure to put your own well-being on the top priority, Eat healthy and rest well to optimize body’s immune function. Keep optimal Vitamin D levels, as it enhance overall immune response.  Getting vaccinated against the flu and other diseases. Note: for those over 65, keep both flu (vaccine for over 65) and pneumonia shots up to date will provide better protection for you.  Vaccination stimulates the immune system to protect against illness.

Take protective measures during Coronavirus pandemic
  1. Remain calm and be prepared for dealing with unprecedented challenges. Fear and anxiety are natural, but won’t help until we can turn it around into positive energies.
  2. Get essential medicine (your prescription refills, over the counter fever/pain reducer, cold/cough remedy, and other personal needs), food (fresh and non-perishable), and everyday living supplies (including disinfect cleaning detergent) at home. You may buy larger quantity, only to reduce the trips to the store but no need to panic buy toilet papers.
  3. Restrict your time in public and practice social distancing. Use disinfectant wipes whenever possible in public areas (i.e., grocery cart/basket, door handles, elevator buttons, touch screens, waiting rooms, public transportation) and use hand sanitizer afterwards. Avoid any non-essential travel or cruise, and avoid public places where crowds may gather or poorly ventilated environment, where the risk of transmission is much higher.
  4. Medical facilities are high risk environment for cross infection. Avoid go to hospital/medical clinics for routine testing, whether it's a annual check-up, a follow-up appointment for a stable condition or an elective procedure, if it can wait, then it should. Use video visit or tele-health options for medical advice if possible.
  5. Stay home doesn’t mean social isolation. Keep connected with family and friends, keep in touch by phone or interact on social media.
  6. Create a new routine. Keep up with physical activities, go for a nature walk in fresh air, or modify your gym workout for a home exercise routine, to include aerobics, strength, balance, and flexibility.
  7. Always use extra caution for food safety and practice good hygiene. Wash well for all raw produce, clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces/utensils, don’t share food or beverages.
  8. Most importantly, the best protection is washing your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds and dry properly, after touching public areas and before eating. Also remember to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with hands.
